A simulation game designed to promote media literacy

AI Literacy with Serious Games ©Graz University Library Publishing

New publication from Graz University Library Publishing

To kick off the new year, Graz University Library Publishing is releasing “AI Literacy with Serious Games. Das Planspiel Journalism_AI als partizipative Reflexionsmethode zur Förderung von Medienkompetenz”. Sascha Ferz and Elisabeth Hödl examine the profound changes brought about by the current media revolution, triggered by ‘intelligent’ algorithms and advancing digitalisation. They conclude that there is a significant social need to examine AI-supported processes critically. To meet this need, AI education must be as inclusive as possible, promoting ethical, legal and democratic skills within the framework of critical media and AI literacy, alongside technical knowledge. Developed as part of the Zukunftsfonds Steiermark (Styrian Future Fund), the serious game Journalism_AI addresses this challenge by providing participants with an experimental, collaborative learning space. Here, they can adopt different perspectives, each with its own specific logic, and conduct independent research to inform decisions on the regulation of AI systems in journalism.

This Open Access publication is available to download for free as a PDF from Graz University Library Publishing. You will soon also be able to borrow a printed copy via unikat.
