Open Access publication fund for articles
In accordance with its Open Access Policy, the University of Graz supports researchers in making their research results openly accessible.
The publication fund (see below) covers Article Processing Charges (APCs) for articles in Open Access journals (Gold Open Access). For publications with the publishers MDPI, Cambridge University Press and Taylor & Francis, please use the respective Open Access agreements.
The University of Graz will cover APCs for articles in subscription journals (Hybrid Open Access) if an Open Access agreement exists with the respective publisher.
The publication fund can also be used to cover the costs of contributions to edited volumes, provided that the entire volume is published Open Access. For further information on how to apply, please contact ub.publikationsservices(at)uni-graz.at.
You can find information about the new FWF Open Access block grant on the intranet.
Conditions and application
Funding applications may be made immediately before or after submitting an article, or immediately after acceptance. Reimbursement of costs that have already been paid is not possible.
The following conditions must be fulfilled for the publication fund to cover the costs:
- The corresponding author of the publication is a member of the University of Graz.
- The corresponding author states their affiliation in the publication as "University of Graz" or "Universität Graz" (see the affiliation guidelines).
- The publication is published under a Creative Commons license (CC BY is compulsory for articles with FWF funding!) and receives a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
- The journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
- The publication includes an acknowledgement of financial support from the University of Graz publication fund or the Austrian Science Fund (FWF):
- Recommended wording of the acknowledgement for articles with University of Graz funding: "The authors acknowledge the financial support by the University of Graz." or "Dieser Artikel wurde durch finanzielle Unterstützung der Universität Graz Open Access publiziert.")
- Articles with FWF funding must include the FWF in the acknowledgements of the submitted version of the article using the following sentence: "This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission."
- Funding is not available for publications from third-party-funded projects, like Horizon Europe projects (except for FWF grants, which are handled by the University of Graz).
If your article fulfils these conditions, please apply for funding after submitting your paper to the selected journal.
The publication services department will review the application and inform you whether the fund can cover the publication costs.
Further information
Not funded:
-
additional charges for making articles in subscription journals Open Access (hybrid model); publication costs for these articles may be covered under Open Access publishing agreements.
-
additional costs such as page charges, color charges, etc.
Application procedure for funding
-
You apply for funding for an article in an Open Access journal. The application goes to the publication services department, and the central registry and postal administration.
-
The publication services department reviews the application and informs you whether the publication costs will be covered. If the answer is yes, the publication services department will send you the standard wording to declare the funding in the acknowledgements of your article. You have to ensure that the acknowledgement appears correctly in the publication. Please note: for publications funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the correct acknowledgement must appear in the submitted version of your article!
-
You provide the university library with the publisher's contact details as soon as the publication has been accepted, and the publisher will be invoicing you.
-
The university library provides the publisher with the necessary billing information (based on the SAP purchase order - purchase order number and billing address).
-
The publisher sends the invoice with the required billing information to the central registry and postal administration or the designated mailbox. (If you receive the invoice directly from the publisher, please inform the publication services department and do not pay the invoice yourself!). The invoice will be processed through the standard electronic invoice workflow.
-
Please notify the publication services department once your funded article has been published. The article will also be uploaded to unipub, the University of Graz publication server.
