The database Germanische Altertumskunde Online (GAO) covers the disciplines of archaeology and ethnology, history and art history, and religious studies. In addition, its content is of interest to linguists and philologists, especially for German, Scandinavian and Dutch Studies. As the GAO encompasses every aspect of Germanic antiquity, there is also content on legal history and folklore.

The GAO is expanded every year, and its content spans the 7th millennium BC to the 15th century AD. You can switch between German and English on the database homepage under "Zugriff verwalten" at the top right. The content is mainly in German, with some parts in English. Included in the database are:
- Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde (RGA): 35 volumes and two index volumes, published 1972-2008, occasional passages in English
- Supplementary volumes to the Reallexikon (RGA-E): more than 130 volumes to date, for example:
- Old English Runes (contributions by experts in runology)
- Engaging Moments (the first collection of the earliest West Germanic bridal-quest narratives)
- Narration and Hero Recounting the Deeds of Heroes in Literature and Art of the Early Medieval Period
- Between the Worlds Contexts, Sources, and Analogues of Scandinavian Otherworld Journeys
