Search portal unikat
Unikat is the central entry point for literature search at Graz University Library. Here you can search for printed and electronic media such as books, essays, journals, newspapers, maps, DVDs ... search. Old holdings acquired before 1983 are successively entered into the search portal.

Electronic Journals Library (EZB)
In the EZB you will find all licensed as well as freely accessible, scientific full-text journals - the fast way to an article!

Database Information System (DBIS)
DBIS supports you in selecting the right scientific database for your research. The platform lists licensed and freely accessible databases from all subject areas. Please note the individual terms of use of the respective database.

Open Access Publication Server (unipub)
On the publication server unipub of the University of Graz you will find:
- Open Access Journals
- University publications (master theses, diploma theses, dissertations)
- Secondary publications (journal articles, contributions to collective works and conference proceedings, books, working papers)
- Books of the publication platform Graz University Library Publishing
- Digitized media of the Special Collections, the University Museums and the University Archives

(Digitized) card catalogs
Unfortunately, the entire holdings are not yet fully recorded in the unikat search portal. If you are looking for literature published before 1983 and not found in unikat, you can refer to alternative catalogs.
The literature of the main library (1501 - 1982) is searchable online in the digitized nominal catalog by author:inside. For an introduction, see our video tutorial "Old Holdings".
Older holdings of the faculty, departmental and institute libraries are listed without gaps only in the card catalogs on site.
The search portals of the UB Graz are not sufficient?
- The Austrian network search engine enables searching in the holdings of more than 90 scientific institutions of the Austrian Library Network.
- The Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog KVK is a search engine for finding several hundred million books, journals, e-media, etc. in library and book trade catalogs worldwide.
- WorldCat is the most comprehensive directory for library media of all kinds.
Books
Printed and electronic books purchased at the University Library since 1993 can be found without gaps in unikat under the various search entries, such as title or author. For older works, the information on the old stock is relevant.
Title references of books can also be found in scientific databases. Please note that media that are listed there are not automatically available at the university library.

Magazines
The University Library offers printed and electronic journals from all departments. They are available for use online or on site and are listed under the title of the journal in unikat.

Use the BrowZine and LibKey tools to quickly and easily access e-journals and the articles they contain.
Newspapers
Current issues of regional, national and international printed daily and weekly newspapers are available in the lounge areas of the main library (4th floor) and in the Wall Library Center.
A diverse selection of newspapers, magazines and series on microfilm is available in the media library.
Pressreader offers the possibility to read approx. 7,000 newspapers and magazines in 60 languages online in the original layout in the browser or in the app.
The wiso Presse database offers more than 200 daily and weekly newspapers in the German-speaking world, while Nexis provides access to around 5,000 Anglo-American journals, newspapers and magazines.
Many historical newspapers are available online in the Austrian National Library's ANNO online portal.
Essays & Articles
In unikat you can search for electronic articles from journals or books. Here you will find both full texts and bibliographic references from a variety of licensed databases. This search entry is particularly suitable for a first search.

For a thorough article search on a specific topic, it is best to use the scientific databases. You can use the Database Information System(DBIS) to find the relevant scientific databases for your subject area.
Textbook Collections
Textbook collections provide current and introductory study literature from a variety of disciplines. Due to high demand, the University Library provides multiple copies of a textbook.
All holdings of the textbook collections are listed in unikat and can only be borrowed by students on site. The loan period for textbooks is 60 days.
Textbook collections can be found at the Main Library, Faculty Library RESOWI and History Department Library.
Reserve collections
A reserve collection is a compilation of literature (printed/electronic) on courses that instructors provide for their students. As a rule, the books are placed under the name of the lecturer and the title of the course. To ensure that all students have access to this literature, it is generally not borrowed, but can be read, copied or scanned in the libraries.
The literature is marked in unikat as part of the respective semester handbook; access is via the list of reserve collections.
Videos, sound carriers, microforms
All "non-book materials" such as videos, audio carriers, microfilms and microfiches (audiovisual media) are indexed in unikat . After the search query, you narrow down to the media types in a second step.
These media can be used in the media library or borrowed.
Historical stocks
Works published before 1901 cannot be borrowed and are kept in the special collection areas of the individual libraries. A large part of these rare and valuable holdings can be used in the Special Collections of the Main Library.
Many historical documents have already been digitized and are available under Special Collections | DIGITAL.

Open Access Publications
Many freely available publications are listed in unikat, but represent only a fraction of all scientific publications worldwide. Further search options:
- BASE - one of the world's largest search engines for scientific web documents (about 60% freely available).
- DOAJ - important index for pure, quality-controlled open access journals
- Paperty - multidisciplinary full text database for articles from open access journals
- DOAB and OAPEN - portals of open-access, scholarly, peer-reviewed books
- OpenDOAR - directory of publications from numerous university document servers worldwide
- OpenAIRE - EU project for the verification of Open Access documents
