Borrow

To borrow books and other media, you will need a library card, which is valid all the University of Graz libraries.

You can activate this card in UNIGRAZonline for all the libraries in the Styrian library network.

A finger presses a key on the keyboard that says "Borrow media". {f:if(condition: 'momius - stock.adobe.com', then: '©momius - stock.adobe.com')}

To borrow a book from the main library stacks, you must order it in unikat. You will receive an e-mail notification when the ordered book is ready for you at the issue desk. Ordered books are available for pick-up for five opening days. The last pick-up is at 4 p.m. on weekdays. Please pay attention to changes to pick-up times on non-teaching days.

The textbook collection on the mezzanine level of the main library has a self-checkout desk where students can check out textbooks for 60 days.

In unikat, you can order copies of articles from periodical and newspaper volumes kept in the external depository library.

The media in these libraries are freely accessible on the shelves. In unikat, you can see whether the media can be borrowed or only used on site, as well as the exact location and number of a book. If you want to borrow something (if it is allowed), take it from the shelf and check it out at the counter.

The RESOWI and Theology faculty libraries each have a self-checkout device where you can check out and return media yourself.

The loan period is generally 30 days but this can be longer or shorter depending on the library. You can borrow up to 25 items in total from all libraries at one time.

Extensions are possible as long as another user has not reserved the item.

Special borrowing conditions

  • Thesis authors:
After submitting the signed request form (PDF), the loan period is extended to 60 days and for up to 75 items at a time. For doctoral candidates, these loan conditions are set automatically via UNIGRAZonline.
  • Academic and project staff:
The borrowing conditions are set automatically via UNIGRAZonline. The loan period is either 360 or 90 days, for either 125 or 75 items at a time.

Please return your items to the library where you borrowed them before the loan period expires.

Outside opening hours, you can use the return boxes in the entrance areas for the following libraries while the building is open:

  • Theology faculty library
  • Departmental Libraries of English, Geography, German Studies, Mathematics
  • Subject libraries Romance Studies, Slavic Studies, Education, Translation and Linguistics (Wall Library Center)
  • Main library and RESOWI library when the issue desk is closed:
Return boxes outside of the RESOWI library

Items from the return boxes will not be returned until the next business day.

Reminder e-mails are sent automatically a few days before the due date. You are still obliged to pay any reminder fees incurred even if the email cannot not be delivered.

If you have not returned your items before the loan period expires, you will receive a reminder by e-mail. After a further seven days, you will receive a second reminder and, by registered mail, a third reminder.

You will be charged € 2.00 per reminder, plus € 0.20 for each item and each day in arrears. You can pay at the machine in the foyer of the main library or at the self-checkout machine at the RESOWI library.

You can reserve items currently on loan to other people in unikat. After they are returned, they will be held for you at the respective library, and you will be emailed with the details.

If you no longer need a reserved item, you can delete the reservation yourself at any time in your unikat account.

If you lose a book

Please contact the respective library immediately. You must replace the book with a copy of the same or a newer edition.

Collection by proxy

If you wish to collect books for another user, you will need a power of attorney (PDF).
