Resistance to National Socialism was diverse, courageous, and often associated with high personal risk. People from all walks of life stood up against a totalitarian system that did not tolerate dissent. The fate of the Scholl siblings, whose execution anniversary falls on February 22, is a particularly striking example of this. Their involvement in the White Rose resistance group remains a symbol of moral courage and steadfastness to this day. To mark this anniversary, the Media Library of the University Library of Graz is focusing on DVDs that document resistance to the Nazi regime, highlighting individual stories as well as broader historical contexts.
One initial focus is on films about the Scholl siblings: „Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage“ (Sophie Scholl – The Final Days) vividly recounts the last hours of her life, while „Die Weiße Rose“ (The White Rose) sheds light on student resistance in Munich. The documentaries „Die Widerständigen – Zeugen der Weißen Rose“ (The Resistors – Witnesses of the White Rose) and „Nein! Zeugen des Widerstandes in München“ (No! Witnesses of the Resistance in Munich) give contemporary witnesses themselves a chance to speak. In addition, other DVDs are dedicated to the broader spectrum of resistance: „Ich war im KZ“ (I Was in a Concentration Camp) gives survivors a voice, „Konspirantinnen: polnische Frauen im Widerstand 1939-1945“ (Conspirators: Polish Women in the Resistance 1939-1945) and „Küchengespräche mit Rebellinnen“ (Kitchen Conversations with Rebels) focus on female resistance fighters, while „Schattenkampf: Europas Widerstand gegen die Nazis 1939 – 1945“ (Shadow Fight: Europe's Resistance Against the Nazis 1939–1945) spans the whole of Europe. Together, these films remind us how fragile democracy is and how important it remains to actively defend it.
