Pride Month is celebrated worldwide in June – a month dedicated to queer realities, commemorating the Stonewall Uprising and standing for visibility, diversity and equality. The Media Library at Graz University Library is also marking the occasion with selected media to draw attention to queer history, culture and identity. Under the motto ‘Object of the Month’, we are presenting DVDs from our collection that deal impressively with LGBTQIA+ topics.
A classic of queer film history is The Celluloid Closet, a documentary about the portrayal of homosexuality in Hollywood cinema - from hints to open representation. The Boys in the Band shows the inner life of a group of gay friends in the 1970s and deals with self-acceptance and social pressure. Carol, a quiet, visually powerful film, tells of a forbidden love between two women in conservative 1950s America. In The Watermelon Woman, filmmaker Cheryl Dunye explores African-American queer history with a semi-documentary approach. United in Anger highlights the activism of ACT UP during the AIDS crisis and Tangerine shows the lives of trans women in L.A. in an explosive mix of tragedy and humor. Moonlight, which won an Oscar, tells the poetic story of a gay black man coming of age. These films not only invite discussion, but also reflect the diversity of queer experiences: as colorful and complex as Pride Month itself!
