Publishing contracts are often extensive and complex. Our experienced staff are very familiar with the terms and conditions customary in the industry and can help you to understand and evaluate the points relevant to you. (If specific legal information is required, we will be happy to put you in touch with our colleagues in the legal department).
We will check for you, among other things –
- Transfer of rights and licensing: partial vs. exclusive transfer of rights of use (especially for open access books), secondary publication rights, Creative Commons licences
- Financial aspects: Conditions such as retail prices, author discounts, printing cost subsidies, open access fees, fees for authors or editors
- Standard industry conditions: Free copies, print run, obligations of authors or editors, etc.
- "Gag" clauses: Obligation to offer further works, competition clause
- The "small print": Conditions for subsequent editions, provisions on author succession, dealing with remainders, etc.
- Hidden costs: Index creation, 2nd galley proof/typesetting changes, graphic editing, etc.
