The Oxford Music Online database contains comprehensive information and peer-reviewed articles on music, musicians, music-making and musicology, as well as an overview of musical history and culture around the world. You can use it to search the following music reference sources:
- Grove Music Online, which includes reference works such as The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, is constantly updated and contains overviews of subjects with detailed bibliographies, biographical articles with lists of a musician’s works, and images and links to audio and video examples.
- The Oxford Companion to Music: This reference work reflects the current state of music research, including music analysis, theory, ethnomusicology and performance practice covering styles from jazz and popular music to dance.
- The Oxford Dictionary of Music: This book presents music history, composers, librettists, singers, orchestras, ballets, and operas from every era, as well as musical instruments and their history in more than 10,000 entries. It also includes contributions on popular music, ethnomusicology, modern and contemporary compositions, music analysis, recording techniques, and multimedia.
Searching: You can begin your search by choosing a category (Topic, Instrument, Era, Region, Place Type or Occupation) or using the search box.
Articles on composers contain complete lists of their works. Where possible, they also list thematic catalogues, which can be used to locate the manuscript.
The bibliographical references at the end of each entry assist with further research. Journal titles are abbreviated in italics in the bibliography. You can click on them to see the full titles. There is a link to a list of all abbreviations used on the left-hand side, below the “More on this topic” option.
The extensive help pages contain short videos and instructions for running a quick search, browsing by category, filtering your results list and using the article pages.
The Topical Guides are lists of editorially selected articles from Grove Music Online on particular eras and genres. The OUPblog also has entries on new, relevant, or unusual topics that may interest you.
