“Fake journals” and “predatory publishing” are dubious business models employed by publishers and journals. Publishing in such journals presents various problems and can damage your academic reputation. The university library can assist you in several ways with identifying and avoiding fake journals:
- The publication services are offering a workshop, „Vorsicht, Falle! Fake journals, predatory conferences & Co“ on June 12th. During the workshop, you will be given information on dubious journals and borderline cases such as MDPI, including some case studies, as well as checklists and tools for identifying dubious offers in good time. In addition, you will get an overview of current developments and other dubious practices, such as predatory conferences. The workshop will be held in German.
-
If you are unable to attend on this date or would like to delve deeper into the topic, you are cordially invited to attend the event ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Inbetween, Keeping the Scholarly Record Clean: Perception and Preservation of Quality in Scholarly Communication’ on 18 June 2024 at TU Graz. The event will be held in German.

You can take a brief look at the topic of fake journals and predatory publishing in the short video ”Fake Journals - Was sind sie und wie damit umgehen?”.
- The publication services website provides more information about fake journals and a guideline for recognising them.
