It's Kästner year! The famous German writer, poet and satirist Erich Kästner would have celebrated his 125th birthday in 2024. His works and person will also be commemorated on the 50th anniversary of his death. Kästner's literary work has had a lasting impact on German literature. To this day, he inspires readers with his quick wit, humour and keen powers of observation.
We keep several film adaptations of Erich Kästner's popular works in the Mediathek. These treasures include timeless classics:
- Emil and the Detectives: a tale of young Emil and his adventures in Berlin, where he and his friends form an unusual detective team to recover stolen money. (4 feature films: 1931 , 1954 , 1964 , 2001)
- Fabian or going to the dogs: Fabian, a disillusioned writer, faces his challenges in the chaotic Berlin of the 1930s. (1 feature film: 2021)
- The Flying Classroom: a boarding school story in which friendships, rivalries and dreams blossom in Kästner's lyrical style. (2 feature films: 1954 , 2023)
These films offer a unique insight into Kästner's literary universe and invite you to experience his works on the big screen. However, they are only a small selection from a total of over 8,000 DVDs on various topics - feature films, documentaries and literary adaptations - which can be borrowed from the media library.
