Eine Nachlese aus dem Projekt Buchpatenschaften

Ioan. Tagautii Ambiani Vimaci, Parisiensis medici De Chirurgica institutione libri quinque. His accessit sextus liber de materia chirurgica, authore Jacobo Hollerio Stempano, medico Parisiensi.

Dieses Buch eröffnet einen spannenden Blick auf die medizinische Praxis zwischen dem 14. und 16. Jahrhundert. Fünf der sechs enthaltenen Abhandlungen widmen sich ausführlich den chirurgischen Aspekten von Tumoren, Wunden, Hernien, Geschwüren, Brüchen sowie Verrenkungen und basieren auf den Schriften Guy de Chauliacs aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Die sechste Abhandlung enthält eine der frühesten Ausgaben von Jacques Houillers De materia chirurgica, in der chirurgische Instrumente beschrieben und abgebildet sind. Eindrucksvoll sind auch die enthaltenen Holzschnitte. Sie zeigen neben medizinischen Instrumenten auch einen Verwundeten auf dem Schlachtfeld, aus dessen Körper ein Pfeil entfernt wird.

Das Buch befindet sich in einem flexiblen Pergamenteinband und wird von handgestochenen Kapitalen in gelber und rosaroter Farbe geziert. Die Heftung erfolgt auf zwei Bünden aus alaungegerbtem Leder. Interessanterweise wurde der Titel händisch auf den Fußschnitt des Buchblocks geschrieben. Die Rückenhinterklebungen bestehen aus wiederverwerteter Handschriftenmakulatur, die vermutlich aus dem 15. Jahrhundert stammt.
