The platform (known as Arcanum Digitheca until 2024) enables users to search an extensive collection of historical publications, including daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and journals, and a number of Hungarian books and encyclopaedias. Its potential applications in research and teaching are diverse, ranging from the contextualisation of political, social, economic and cultural events and developments to media analysis and family and biographical research based on birth, wedding and death notices.
The current 87,249,295 pages of digitised data are easy to search using the full-text search function on the home page. For more comprehensive searches, there is an advanced search function that lets you search for specific keywords in categories such as title, author, or caption, and to combine search criteria. You can use a ‘search query’ to formulate complex searches using logical operators (AND, OR, NOT) and proximity operators, among other things. There are detailed instructions on the various advanced search options on the Arcanum website. You need to register to use the new ‘face search’ feature.
You can also filter the search results by, for example, time period, topic, language or country of publication. If you want to see hits in other languages, you need to delete the preset language filter (which depends on your browser settings). You can sort the list by date or relevance. If you click on a search result, you will see the digitised page, which you can resize, rotate or automatically translate. Registered users can also add bookmarks, save their search queries and receive notifications about new results. You can download up to 50 pages at a time.
The database is accessible from anywhere on campus via unikat and DBIS (switch to English at the top of the page). University members can access it remotely via VPN. Please note: enter https://univpn.uni-graz.at/ub in the VPN address field.
You will need to register (free of charge) to use the personalisation functions. The University Library is not liable for the processing of your data by the provider.
