The collection brings together both classics and more recent adaptations, demonstrating how versatile Austen's material is.
Depending on the film, Emma (1996, 2009, 2020) takes on a different tone: sometimes playful, sometimes more serious, but always featuring the charming heroine who eagerly tries to matchmake those around her. Pride and Prejudice (1940, 2005) can also be discovered in contrasting interpretations: once as an elegant black-and-white drama, once as an atmospherically dense remake. Mansfield Park (1999, 2007) focuses on questions of morality and class consciousness, while Sense and Sensibility (1994, 2008) tells the story of the struggle between reason and emotion in two very different styles. The selection is complemented by Love & Friendship (2016), which portrays the scheming Lady Susan, as well as Northanger Abbey (2007) and Persuasion (1995). The Media Library thus not only offers a kaleidoscope of cinematic approaches to Jane Austen, but also provides a valuable resource for film lovers and Austen scholars alike.
