The Ukraine war, which escalated dramatically in 2022 with the invasion of Russian troops, has deeply shaken the deeply shaken the global community. The destruction and human suffering caused by the war illustrate the destructive consequences of violence and conflict. Cities such as Mariupol, once lively places of everyday life, have become symbol of the cruelty of this war. The plight of the civilian population and the unwavering will to survive are at the center of global attention. In these times, it is important to make the stories of those who have to live under these circumstances visible.
The DVD “20 Days in Mariupol” – available to borrow from the media library - is a powerful testimony to this difficult time. It documents the first days of the siege of the Ukrainian port city and shows how the city struggled to survive in the midst of the war. The impressive work of Ukrainian journalists offers an unvarnished view of daily life in a city that was cut off from the outside world. With authentic images and narratives, the award-winning documentary illustrates the human suffering, courage and hope that continued to exist despite the overwhelming destruction.
