Internal restoration, External restoration

Internal work on the special collections

The special collections include manuscripts, prints, scrolls, archival material, maps, photographs and papyri. With such diverse objects, it is important to adapt the restoration methods to the specifics and needs of each object and to record the changes made to them for future researchers. Therefore, each restoration work is documented by photographing the object before, during and after the restoration and recording the steps and materials used in report form. Examples of recently completed restoration work can be found here. Among the highlights are:

  • a collection of Kepler letters
  • Founding documents of the University (library?) of Graz
  • Georgian Scroll [TBC]

Cooperation with VESTIGIA

The Restoration has been working for several years with Vestigia, the Center for the Study of Book and Script Heritage, which supports the preservation of manuscripts and improves access to them by organizing summer schools, publishing research, and promoting internships. Vestigia also works closely with conservation on its own research projects, especially those related to codicology and book history.

Restoration of external objects

As the only university restoration studio in Austria, we offer external institutions such as monasteries, universities and museums, but also private collectors, the opportunity to have their books and manuscripts restored by our team. Examples of restoration work carried out on behalf of external customers in the restoration studio of Graz University Library can be found here. For more information on the possible restoration of your objects, please read our services.
