Preregistration of scientific studies - An Introduction
Presenter: Dr. Hilmar Brohmer
Preregistration is the practice of registering the hypotheses, methods, or analyses of a scientific study before it is conducted. It can help to identify and reduce questionable research practices such as p-hacking as well as biases, but also support reseachers in planning and documenting their research. Therefore, the ability to meaningfully preregister one's empirical studies and experiments is a key skill for young researchers along with other Open-Science related skills. A preregistration consists of (precise) hypotheses, description of study designs and variables, a justification for a sample size, and an analysis plan.
These components along with caveats will be discussed in this workshop. Additionally, different forms of preregistrations will be shown and attendees will be introduced to the concept of registered reports. In the hands-on part, attendees will be shown how to create a project site on an online repository that supports study preregistration (i.e., the Open Science Framework).
