Hype and seduction in scientific communication: some costs and benefits
Vortragende: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Guilherme Maia de Oliveira Wood (Institut für Psychologie), Finn Buchrieser
Abstracts are the showcase of scientific studies, crafted to make an impression on the reader within a limited space and to determine the amount of attention each study receives.
Professor Guilherme Maia de Oliveira Wood and Finn Buchrieser conducted a study on the ‘hype’ of positive words used in abstracts. Due to the increasingly frequent use of positive emotional words and repetitive text patterns inherently within the last decades, which influence the evaluation and reading behaviour of readers, it is particularly important to check the objectivity of scientific texts. The emergence of text-generating AI models further reinforces this ‘hype’, as they generate particularly positive and repetitive texts.
Professor Wood and Finn Buchrieser will give us an insight into their current research on this hot topic in scholarly communication.
