European Open Science Cloud

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a concept of an important core infrastructure for European science. It aims to create a virtual environment with open and seamless services for storage, management, analysis and re-use of research data. This will be achieved by federating existing national, regional and institutional data infrastructures, currently dispersed across disciplines and EU Member States.

The EOSC initiative was proposed by the European Commission in 2016 as part of the European Cloud Initiative to build a competitive data and knowledge economy in Europe. The implementation roadmap was published in March 2018. The European Commission financially supports the implementation of the EOSC through projects under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020). From 2020, the EOSC portal should provide a central point of access to services and resources.
